It's a classic example.
Suppose I placed a steel girder 50 feet long by 1 ½ feet wide on the floor right there and said I'd give you $20 just for hopping on it and walking from one end to the other. Easy? Okay, but let's say I placed that same girder (the same girder you're so willing to walk across) 100 feet in the air, stretched between two buildings with a good stiff breeze thrown in just for fun, and made the same offer? It's the same girder!
You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who wouldn't walk the first. You'd be just as hard pressed to find anyone who would walk the second. A compelling reason such as a raging fire behind you or a child about to fall in front of you might get you going across the second girder.
Now what if you could eliminate the danger? Suppose a huge safety net stretched under the girder? Suppose you had tethers tied to you? Even if you fall you'll be fine. On top of that, what if we significantly increased the reward?
This isn't a what-if game; it's your life. That girder is your life. It's anything you want to succeed at, anything you need to accomplish. The first building is the beginning, the second, completion. All around you rage reasons "why not" to live, "why not" to do anything, roaring like vicious winds. Voices scream give up, you can't do it anyway. The risks are magnified out of all proportion. Conform, join the crowd. "What do you want to do that for?! Be like everybody else and we'll accept you, at the least we won't persecute you-- as much."
Well, there is a safety net.
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms:
(Deuteronomy 33:27)
God is your safety net. Underneath you are God's arms, waiting just in case you should fall. God's "everlasting," always there arms. God's "everlasting," even if you fell for eternity, they are still underneath you to catch you, arms. And God never misses. And lest you think God might fall asleep or forget you, remember--
he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
(Psalms 121:3-4)
And God remembered Rachel...
(Genesis 30:22)
And God remembered Noah, and every living thing...
(Genesis 8:1)
...God remembered Abraham...
(Genesis 19:29)
And God remembers you.
...the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.
(Malachi 3:16)
God Himself has said,
I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
(Hebrews 13:5, Deuteronomy 31:6)
and...
lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
(Matthew 28:20)
Furthermore, there are tethers tied to you.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
(Psalms 91:11-12)
God Himself has given His own angels charge over you. You might not fear God, but they've seen Him, they do fear Him, and they are very careful about who He has placed in their care.
I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
(Psalms 121:1-4)
Get on that girder. Be the Christian that God wants you to be. Live the life He intends for you to live. The rewards are unfathomable, and the only risk is the sure failure of not trying.
(Romans 10:9, John 3:17, John 5:24, John 1:12)
